Cardiovascular safety of modern sulfonylurea medications as a factor which determines the prime choice

AbstractThis paper examines pros and cons of sulfonylurea medications administration for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) therapy. Advantages, clinical guidelines and adverse effect of this product group are reviewed. Also, a detailed review of biggest clinical studies results is given, in which gliclazide modified release effect on cardiovascular safety in terms of drug's mechanism of action features, its effect on cardiovascular disease leading risk factors, as well as some pleiotropic actions in patients with T2DM, were analyzed.
