Hyperglycemia in critically ill conditions in patients without diabetes mellitus

AbstractThe review article is devoted to the description of the problems of the stress hyperglycemia in patients without diabetes mellitus. Its frequency according to the data of different authors reaches 40-90%. Hyperglycemia in critical ill patients is associated with high lethality in the intensive care units and poor prognosis. Pathogenetic features of stress hyperglycemia are presented, its role is shown in various diseases: surgical, acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, sepsis. Influence on the prognosis and course of critical states of the variability of glycemia and insulin-induced hypoglycemia are described. The effect on glucose metabolism of different types of insulin therapy is described. Part of the work is devoted to hyperglycemia caused by the use of the enteral and parenteral nutrition, as well as its correction.
