Alpha lipoic acid in the treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy from the standpoint of evidence-based medicine

Abstract

In this article we have presented a review of studies on antioxidant treatment of diabetes mellitus complications - diabetic polyneuropathy, the frequency of which, according to different authors, varies from 12 to 95%. This pathology can lead to the development of the most terrible complication of diabetes - diabetic foot syndrome, in frequent manifestations of which are ulcerative defects. Amputation of the lower extremity in patients with diabetes is carried out 10-30 times more often compared to the entire population and is a difficult outcome of ulcerative lesions of the feet. Already after the first amputation, the risk of repeated amputation and death significantly increases, so all the efforts of doctors of different specialties should be directed to the early diagnosis and prevention of this terrible complication.
