Anti-aging therapy with metformin and its use in age-associated pathology
AbstractIncreased life expectancy in recent years is associated with a greater prevalence of chronic diseases and leads to social, economic and medical problems.
Aging, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation are associated with the development of non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, depression and dementia. Older age increases the vulnerability to develop complications and adverse events, so it is especially important for such patients to be treated with safe and known drugs such as metformin. The results of some animal studies and review studies confirm the possible presence of the beneficial effects of metformin on the aging process and related diseases.
