Pathogenetic approach to the treatment of autonomic diabetic neuropathy: the place of alpha-lipoic acid preparations

Abstract

This article reviews the data on the pathogenesis, clinical features, and validity of antioxidant therapy in аutonomic diabetic neuropathy. The relevance of studying of this problem is due to the fact that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus. CVD in type 2 diabetes is diagnosed 2-5 times more often, and mortality from CVD in diabetes reaches 75% of cases. Therefore, early detection of cardiovascular risks, including those associated with cardiac neuropathy, is a priority for the prevention of mortality from diabetic complications.
