Latent presarcopenic obesity in a patient with inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract

Sarcopenia is a pathological condition that manifested by a general, progressive decrease in skeletal muscle mass, muscle strength and performance, which leads to weakness, impairs quality of life and increases the risk of death. Previously, sarcopenia was only prevalent in people aged 60 years at the level of 30% and increase with grow age up to 50% in people 80+. The development of sarcopenia is characterized by a decrease in the number and volume of myofibrils (mainly due to a decrease in the number of fast muscle fibers of type II), their infiltration with adipose (myosteatosis) and connective tissue. Sarcopenia cover excess of adipose tissue, as body mass index, waist circumference and total weight can be within normal limits, misleading both patients and doctors about maintaining a normal body composition. This clinical case, presented a patient whose anthropometric data (body mass index) match to the norm, but the data of bioimpedance analysis show a severe deficiency of muscle tissue and an excessive amount of adipose tissue.
