Women's health and Wilson's disease: study, evaluation and prediction of treatment

Abstract

In a retrospective multicenter study, 111 patients with Wilson's disease were examined (mean age 28.7±7.9 years, range 16-46 years). Maternal complications during pregnancy, incidence of spontaneous abortions and congenital malformations and their dependence on disease-specific treatment before, during and after pregnancy were analyzed. Patients with an established diagnosis who received medical treatment had significantly fewer miscarriages than patients who stopped taking drugs during pregnancy. Also, the authors did not identify any serious birth defects in the considered series of clinical cases. Recommended chelation therapy in pregnant women with Wilson's disease should be continued with a controlled decrease in the daily dose of drugs to 60-70% and should be prescribed in full amount of prescribed drug dosages during lactation.
