Predictive risk factors for clinical outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and a new coronavirus infection

Abstract

Mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is 2 times higher compared to those without a history of DM, with a primary prevalence of women in the proportion of deaths. Patients with T2D had a high frequency of associated diseases: coronary heart disease (CHD), chronic heart failure (CHF), chronic kidney disease, obesity, and were characterized by a naturally more severe course of COVID-19, with a higher proportion of mechanical ventilation and transfers to the ICU by 1,3 times compared to the group without diabetes. Arterial hypertension among cardiovascular diseases, such as CHD, CHF was the most important in the risk of death for patients with T2DM. In patients with T2DM, the risk of death occurs at an earlier age than in those without diabetes (66 vs 71 years). The cut-off points according to the ROC-analysis of the main parameters reflecting the severity of COVID-19 (CRP, LDH, D-dimer) were lower in the T2DM group than in the control group.
