Causes, methods of early diagnosis and correction of vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

An article represents modern ideas about the cobalamin metabolism, as well as mechanisms of development of vitamin B12 deficiency and its consequences in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods for early diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency are also described. We reviewed the possibility of using oral forms of vitamin B12 preparations for correcting vitamin B12 deficiency, in particular, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Keywords:vitamin B12, type 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetic neuropathy, metformin, Castle’s intrinsic factor, manifest and subclinical vitamin B12 deficiency, holotranscobalamin, homocysteine, methylmalonate, oral vitamin B12 preparations, hydroxocobalamin, cobalamin
