Analysis of glycemic and lipid profiles, homocysteine levels in patients with metabolic syndrome in a pandemic of a new coronavirus infection

Abstract

Coronavirus infection (CI) contributes to damage and disruption of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas, which in turn leads to impaired carbohydrate metabolism, insulin resistance and increased blood glucose levels.

Aim – to conduct a retro- and prospective analysis of the effect of the Siberian fir terpene complex (SFTC) on glycemic and lipid profiles, as well as on the level of homocysteine in the blood in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) in the context of a new CI pandemic.

Material and methods. 63 patients with MS aged 58.91± 8.07 years were randomized: 31 (main group) received SFTC in addition to conventional therapy, 32 (comparison group) received standard treatment according to the protocol.

Results and discussion. SFTC had a positive effect on BMI with a six-fold increase over baseline (p=0.0009). A decrease in cholesterol levels was registered to 5.98±0.62 mmol/l, p=0.0462, triglycerides – to 1.69±0.44 mmol/l, p=0.0384, HDL (high density lipoprotein) – to 1.26±0.46 mmol/l, p=0.0491, LDL (low density lipoprotein) – to 4.97±0.94 mmol/l, p=0.0472. An individual analysis of glucose levels revealed a positive trend in 7.14% of patients against those absent at the beginning of the study. HbA1c had a slow recovery dynamics (7.8±0.81%, p=0.0724). Homocysteine values reached the upper limits of standard values (15.69±0.95 µmol/l, p=0.0411).

Conclusion. The addition of SFTC to the conventional treatment showed a favorable effect on the dynamics of glycemic and lipid profiles, homocysteine levels in patients with MS.
