Assessment of androgen status in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

The clinical and laboratory parameters and the results of questionnaires of 45 men with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) aged 45–75 years with a duration of diabetes mellitus of 5–16 years were analyzed in order to determine the state of androgenic status, quality of life and nutrition.

As a result of the study, it was revealed that the examined patients with T2DM had obesity (62%) and overweight (38%), more than half of the patients (58.1%) had diseases of the genitourinary system. According to the AMS questionnaire, testosterone deficiency was detected (average score 41.3±9.4), according to the ICEF questionnaire – significant erectile dysfunction was detected (average score 8.8± 5.8), the average score on the HADS anxiety and depression scale was normal (3.4±2.3 and 6.0±2.4).

Results: in most men with diabetes, the main risk factors for androgen deficiency include abdominal obesity and diseases of the genitourinary system. Men with T2DM have signs of moderate androgen deficiency and significant erectile dysfunction, there are no changes in psychoemotional status. More than a third of men with T2DM do not follow dietary recommendations, which is one of the most important reasons for the lack of achieving the target values of glycemia, HbA1c and lipids.
