Are diabetes mellitus and elevated body mass index risk factors for complicated course of the novel coronavirus infection?

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of complications of a new coronavirus infection against the background of diabetes mellitus and various body mass index.

Material and methods. The work was based on an assessment of the results of providing care to 403 patients (aged 20 to 92 years) of the COVID‑19 infectious diseases department with acute viral pneumonia. Of the 64 patients with carbohydrate disorders, 50 suffered from type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), 14 patients had type 1 diabetes mellitus (main group), and 339 patients did not have the above disorders of carbohydrate metabolism. We analyzed the features of the course of COVID‑19 against the background of diabetes and without it, as well as in patients with different BMI.

Results. The presence of diabetes increases the likelihood of complications and death due to COVID‑19. The presence of a new coronavirus infection increases the likelihood of decompensation of diabetes mellitus. Based on the data obtained, it can be said that diabetes mellitus, as well as changes in BMI (both decrease and increase) are risk factors for severe COVID‑19.
