Diagnostic value of core-needle biopsy of follicular tumors of the thyroid gland

Abstract

Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy is the standard for evaluating thyroid nodules with a high safety profile and a relatively low number of non-diagnostic findings. Nevertheless, this diagnostic method traditionally has its weak points. Diagnostic category Bethesda IV (follicular tumor) does not allow a reliable assessment of the risk of detecting thyroid carcinoma. In recent years, the use of an analogue such as core-needle biopsy in thyroidology, has been actively discussed. The main difference of this method is the use of thin needles (18–21G) and pistols with an automatic spring mechanism. The obtainbed histological material can increase the diagnostic accuracy to 10–20%. Histological staining with hematoxylin and eosin can be supplemented by immunohistochemical studies, which further increases the diagnostic possibilities. In the presented review of the literature, an analysis was made of the use of a core-needle biopsy of the thyroid gland in order to assess the follicular tumors of the thyroid gland.
