Experience in using open-source automated insulin delivery systems in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

In the Russian Federation, there is a rapid increase in the number of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) who independently set up and use open-source closed loop automated insulin delivery (CL-AID) systems. In this regard, it seems important to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CL-AID systems among patients with T1DM in Russia. Analysis of the results of the study showed that the use of CL-AID systems is associated with improvement in glycemic control and a reduction in the burden associated with hypoglycemia. The use of CL-AID systems leads to a significant decrease in HbA1c levels, increases time in range (TIR) and reduces glycemic variability in patients with T1DM. In patients on insulin therapy using the CL-AID systems there is a decrease in the level of fear of hypoglycemic conditions compared to multiple dose insulin injections therapy and to the method of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion.
